A friend asked me to make sounds for his pong game on my analog synth. My idea was to provide as many different sounds as possible, so I patched the synth to generate a new random bouncing sound about every 2.4 seconds. I recorded some hours, then let Audacity automatically find, mark and save the single sounds. The friend received an archive with 4052 different bouncing sounds, and I think he is still in the process of listening through them 😃 Some notes on the patch: The patch consists of three layers: various random and pseudo-random generators for voltage sources that are constant during the generation of a sound but different for the next sound, four triangle modulation oscillators that can go from very slow (almost DC) oscillation up to high audio range, one voice, consisting of a square wave VCO, a sawtooth VCO and pink noise, all sent through a waveshaper and finally through a low pass filter (left audio) or band pass filter (right audio), The modulation oscillators are frequency-modulated by the current values of four different voltage sources. The following aspects of the voice are modulated by the modulation oscillators, or by some of the constant voltage sources: the duration of the decay envelope for the sound, the pitch of the sawtooth and square VCO, the variation in pitch between the the two VCOs (from almost in tune to very detuned), the modulation depth of the pitch modulations of the VCOs, the amount of pink noise mixed in, the waveshaping of the voice, the filter cutoff of the low pass and band pass filter, The idea of the modulation oscillators is that depending on their current frequency they modulate their destinations in quite different ways: almost constant (DC) offsets, slow (envelope-like) rise or fall, slight (LFO-like) vibratos, up to FM-like modulations
